WHAT an epic, heartbreaking conclusion to a truly excellently written fantasy trilogy. I’m so glad I read it. Hannah Kaner has written us the perfect blend of modern and classic fantasy — a classic, nostalgic, epic storytelling style with a modern approach to queerness and other social issues.

This was such a satisfying read. The pacing continues to be perfect, the twists are twisty, the lore deepens with each installment, loyalties have layers upon layers, and Page and Arcturus are perfection.

While it’s not perfect, overall I call this step away from Shadowhunters a success. It’s definitely different from Clare’s previous work, and she’s succeeded in showing that she can write much more adult books. High level, I enjoyed it and will surely be continuing with the series!

To Shape a Dragon’s Breath s a beautifully rendered, fiercely imagined Indigenous Own Voices fantasy novel set in an academic setting about anticolonialism and dragons. I did think the shape of the plot was a little flat, but overall I liked it a lot.

Arca is the second book in the Five Queendoms series, and I think it was even stronger than book one (Scorpica). I’m definitely enjoying these enough to want the next book!

Even though Fevered Star (the sequel to Black Sun) definitely has that book-two bridge kind of feeling, I still loved it. I can’t imagine how it will all possibly end, but I also can’t wait to find out.

Scorpica is a solid epic fantasy novel that brings a fresh take to some tried-and-true tropes. It sets us up well for book two, and I’m looking forward to it.

The Bone Shard Emperor was a great sequel to The Bone Shard Daughter. There was quite a bit of worldbuilding in the beginning, but the ending was really good. I can’t wait to read the last one!

The Bone Shard Daughter is the start of what promises to be a fantastic adventure. The characters are lovable and the magic system is fascinating. I can’t wait for book 2!
