My review

What a joy to be back with Amina and her lovable crew! I’ll keep this review relatively short, as it’s mostly for folks who’ve already read book 1. TLDR, I don’t think this was as strong of a book as the first one, BUT I had a good time with it and the ending was AHH and I’m definitely excited to keep reading!

We pick up with Amina a bit of time after we left her; she’s resentful of the peris for dragging her into this contract to find and destroy five magical objects, especially as she feels like she’s missing too much of Marjana’s childhood. But they come calling again, and she must go, this time to a hidden island nobody ever escapes from, where reportedly an evil enchantress hordes treasure, including a spindle that can change the tapestry of fate (who you are, what you remember, etc etc etc).

So the crew gets together again (plus a secret stowaway?) and sets off. I think the first ~25% was especially nicely paced, with Amina having to make a few exciting pitstops to begin solving the mystery before they head directly for the island. But once they got there, I did find myself frustrated with the pacing. We had some characters communicating badly, Amina naively ignoring some things that were obviously important, and basically it just took a frustratingly long time for everything to click into place. BUT once it did, around the 60% mark, it picked back up again, and as I mentioned the ending was very, very well done. (And the last line! OMG!)

It was great to spend more time with Dalila in this book, too. I hope we get more of Majed and Tinbu next time. Can’t wait for book 3!
