My Review
The Song Rising is the third book in the Bone Season series, which as of this writing includes five of the planned seven books, plus two novellas. I was immediately obsessed upon finishing The Bone Season, and while The Mime Order had some book-two syndrome, I wasn’t upset about it because I could FEEL it setting us up for such a rich world and plot throughout the rest of the series.
I’d say the first half of The Song Rising feels more like book 2 than book 1, but then it really finds its stride. Paige and her people travel to other places (Machester, Edinburgh), which gives us a glimpse into other cities under Scion and other syndicates, expanding the world even more. Paige is also really finding her stride as a leader, and all that growth feels expertly nonlinear and in character (and I never get tired of watching Warden remind her why she’s a f*cking badass.)
Also: THAT ENDING. I’ve said it before and I’ll probably say it again before this series is over, but man, books like these are why we read fantasy. Onward!
